The First Battle of Ypres was the largest British battle of 1914 and the most costly, with more than 56,000 casualties.


We commemorate the centenary of this important start to four years of con?ict in Flanders and will attend ceremonies and special events.

5-Day Tour - 2014

  • Oct 20 - Local departure by coach then to Belgium or northern France for a four night stay.
  • Oct 21 to Oct 23 - We will visit key sites connected with the First Battle of Ypres in October and November 1914. We will walk the graves at Ypres Town Cemetery where some of the earliest casualties are buried including Prince Maurice of Battenberg; relative of Her Majesty the Queen. We look at the fighting along the Menin Road, see where the cavalry fought at Messines and Zandvoorde, visit the ‘Aristocrats Cemetery’ at Zillebeke, and see where the Christmas Truce took place near Ploegsteert. We visit the newly-opened Messines Museum which will include archaeological displays relating to the recent documentary about the ‘WW1 Tunnels of Death’ as shown on Channel 5 featuring Leger Guides Paul Reed and Peter Williams. We will also see the 'In Flanders Fields' Museum which plans a special exhibition about 1914. 3xB
  • Oct 24 - Journey to Calais then return home. B
