5-Day Break
- Day 1 – Departure by coach then onwards to Belgium for a four-night stay.
- Day 2 – La Coupole, Miracle of Dunkirk, Ypres and the Last Post Ceremony We see the little known V1 (‘doodlebug’) fixed launch site near Hazebrouck and then explore the exceptional La Coupole museum, a former German V2 rocket complex. After lunch we learn about those who fought on and those who escaped during the withdrawal to the Dunkirk Perimeter. You will see the site of the evacuation ‘Mole’ and visit the Military Cemetery at Dunkirk Town. In the evening, join our optional excursion to Ypres and attend the moving Last Post Ceremony at the magnificent Menin Gate Memorial. B
- Day 3 – German Cross-Channel Firing Guns and Vengeance Weapon sites. Massacre at Wormhout We study the May 1940 fighting around Calais, seeing the Cathedral Bunker, Fort Neuilly and Fort Lapin. Visiting the ‘thought provoking’ sites of the Todt Battery with its immense Railway Gun, the V3 London Cannon site at Mimoyeques, the V2 complex at Eperlecques and viewing the Cap Blanc Nez and the Cap Gris Nez area we ponder ‘what might have been’ had Bomber Command been less effective and the Allies had not have landed on D-Day? At the close of the day we pay our respects to the fallen at the site of the Memorial Barn near Wormhout B
- Day 4 – The Atlantic Wall Museum and Bray Dunes After viewing the impressive Atlantic Wall Museum collection we visit the Dunkirk Perimeter at the Nieuwpoort Locks position. After lunch we explore the Bray Dunes and Zuydecoote Hospital area and look at the evacuation beaches where the ‘small ships’ came to prominence. In the evening join our optional excursion to picturesque Bruges B
- Day 5 – Calais Returning to Calais we continue our study of the May 1940 fight to the finish in the town and conclude with a visit to the Parc St. Pierre museum before returning home. B
